In 1997, the WHO announced to the world that we were in an obesity pandemic.<\/p>\n
By 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults – people 18 years of age and older – were overweight. Of these, more than 650 million were obese. Overall, about 13% of the world’s adult population (11% of men and 15% of women) were obese in 2016.<\/p>\n
In 2017, the WHO released this update: Obesity has reached the proportions of a global epidemic, with at least 2.8 million people dying each year as a result of being overweight or obese.<\/p>\n
COMPARISON OF TWO EPIDEMICS<\/p>\n
Number of deaths per day in Quebec – all causes = 200\/day. – per obesity approximately = 20\/day. – by Covid 19: average \/day since the beginning of the pandemic = 25\/day.<\/p>\n
Obesity and its consequences kill approximately 7,000 Quebecers annually. Covid will kill about 7,000 people in 2020 and thanks to vaccines probably for only one year. Almost non-existent resources to face the obesity pandemic.<\/p>\n
